Course concept

What if reconnecting with Africa was not only about returning to the land—but also about rediscovering the spiritual heritage of our ancestors?

SEA Benin is pleased to announce a 4-Week Live Online Cultural & Spiritual Immersion into Vodun Spirituality, designed especially for Afro-descendants and anyone sincerely interested in understanding Vodun from its West African roots.

Central question

What can Vodun teach us about who we are, where we come from, and our relationship with the sacred?

 

The four-week curriculum


Week 1 — Understanding VodunWorldview, origins, meaning and the relationship between the visible and invisible worlds.

Key questions:

  • What is Vodun? What does It mean?

  • Where does Vodun come from?

  • How did Vodun develop among Aja-Fon communities?

  • What is the relationship between the visible and invisible worlds?

  • How do Vodun traditions understand the Creator?

  • What is the place of human beings within creation?

  • Why has Vodun been misunderstood and demonized?

 

Week 2 — The Vodun & Sacred ForcesTopics :

·       Mawu-Lissa,

·       Legba, Sakpata,

·       Heviosso,

·       Dan/Aido-Hwedo,

·       Water-related spiritual traditions (Mami Wata)

·       And other spiritual traditions connected to nature and cosmic order

 

Week 3 — Ritual, Divination & Sacred Community

Topics:

  • Sacred spaces

  • Temples and shrines

  • Priests and priestesses

  • Prayer and Songs

  • Drumming and Dance

  • Offerings and sacrifice

  • Divinations (Fa and systems of spiritual knowledge)

  • Possession and spiritual embodiment

  • Initiation

  • Festivals and community ceremonies

  • Sacred knowledge and confidentiality


Week 4 — Vodun, Slavery, Diaspora & ReconnectionCultural survival, the African Diaspora, Haiti, Brazil, spiritual memory, identity and the contemporary revival of interest in Vodun.

Topics:

  • Vodun before European colonization

  • The impact of the transatlantic slave trade

  • Spiritual resistance and cultural survival

  • African spiritual traditions in the Diaspora (Haiti, Brazil, Americas, etc.)

  • Vodun and contemporary Afro-descendant identity

  • Vodun and tourism (Vodun Days and contemporary Benin)

  • The future of Vodun

Beninese educator, cultural custodian, writer, and tour guide, Gerard Richard Agbayanou is dedicated to reconnecting people of African descent with the history, wisdom, and spiritual heritage of their ancestors.

Founder & President of SEA Benin and author of Understanding Vodun Spirituality (2024), Gerard brings together academic knowledge, cultural experience, and living African traditions.
